The Australian Honours System recognises the special contribution Australian citizens make to their communities locally, nationally, and overseas through voluntary endeavour and through a wide range of service including in the Arts, Industry, Commerce, Education, Health, charities and the armed services.
The Order of Australia and the Australian Bravery Decorations are the honours more widely known in the community although there are additional awards which recognise community service, occupation-related civilian activity and service in the Australian Defence Force.

At twice yearly investiture ceremonies at Government House, Brisbane, and on other occasions in the north of the State, the Governor formally invests Queensland recipients with national honours and awards.
The names of award recipients are announced on Australia Day (26 January) and on The Queen's birthday public holiday (in June).
