Governor receives Address-in-Reply
For the first time in Queensland’s history, the Governor has received the Parliament of Queensland’s Address-in-Reply from an Aboriginal Member of Parliament.
The Governor received the Address from the Honourable Leeanne Enoch MP at a ceremony held at Government House on Friday 19 February 2016.
The Address-in-Reply is the traditional parliamentary reply to the Governor’s Opening Speech, which was delivered on 25 March 2015 at the opening of the First Session of the 55th Parliament of Queensland.
After the Address-in-Reply has been agreed to by the House, it is usually the Speaker, accompanied by the Sergeant-at-Arms with the Mace, the two movers of the debate and any other members who so wish, who presents the Address to the Governor at Government House. The Governor then makes a reply on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queensland’s Head of State. At the next sitting of parliament, the Speaker informs the House of this presentation, and reads the Governor's official reply.
However, in this instance, the Speaker, who also attended the ceremony at Government House, had requested that Minister Enoch present the Address to the Governor on behalf of the Queensland Parliament.
