Presentation of The Honourable John Mickel MP, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Remarks by Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO, Governor of Queensland
21 April 2009
Mr Speaker,
In the presence of your colleagues, family and friends, I extend to you my warmest congratulations on your election as Speaker of the 53rd Queensland Parliament.
This is one of the most important and challenging positions in the Parliament, requiring great depth of experience and a very special combination of skills and personal qualities to guide the affairs of the House, including at its most unruly and turbulent moments.
You will need wisdom, goodwill and humour - as well as determination and firmness at critical points in the ebb and flow of debate and discussion. I have no doubt that your patience will be tested, by colleagues across the political spectrum.
However, I also have no doubt that this is a position for which you are admirably suited and that you will fill with distinction.
I wish you much enjoyment in the position and every success and satisfaction in the fulfillment of your significant responsibilities.
