Parliament House - 29th July 2003

Response to addresses of welcome at the swearing-in of Ms Quentin Bryce, AC as 24th Governor of Queensland, Parliament House, Brisbane

Thank you Mr Beattie and Mr Springborg for your warm and generous messages of welcome to me and to my husband. At this defining moment in my life, my immediate thoughts are of the significant honour of being appointed Governor of Queensland.

I am mindful of the role’s historic links across the years since Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859. In particular I recall the efforts of past governors, of my lifetime, who brought skill, dignity and diplomacy to the office.

As I reflect on the past and the future, I am encouraged and heartened by the many opportunities ahead of me to engage with people throughout Queensland. I look forward very much to using my experiences and energies to promote individual and community endeavours.

Where I can, I want to harness the intellect, skills and goodwill of individuals and organisations, some of whom may be less well known than others, to enhance our State. I want to elevate the knowledge of our community’s achievements and our respect for one another.

I intend to do all I can towards the progress and harmony of our wonderful State. I know that what I achieve will be underpinned by the support of my husband, Michael, and our family of four generations.

As an Australian, I am a confident Queenslander, one who is acutely aware of the generosity of spirit that Queensland people share. I am proud of their contributions to our national reputation and sense of identity.

I was born in Queensland, and have been singularly fortunate to be able to pursue my dreams and aspirations. This was made possible by my parents, and also as a consequence of the prosperity and stability provided by Queensland.

I see in the role of Governor a unique opportunity to serve the community in which I was nurtured, educated, my values and principles shaped, and where I was encouraged to participate in our democracy. I look ahead with great optimism, strengthened by my understanding of one’s responsibility towards society, and passionately interested in learning more about this vast State.

Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to know how much I appreciate your making this occasion so special and significant. I may not have the opportunity to meet everyone this afternoon, but I am sure our paths will cross many times in the future.

I thank you for the honour of your presence.
