Swearing-in Ceremony, Governor's Response to Messages of Welcome
29 July 2008
Premier, Chief Justice, Ministers of the Crown, Mr Speaker, Leader of the Opposition, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Thank you, Ms Bligh and Mr Springborg for your warm messages of congratulation.
I am deeply conscious of the great honour of this appointment and of the responsibilities which I now undertake to represent Her Majesty as the Twenty-fifth Governor of Queensland.
I give my solemn assurance that I will work with commitment and dedication to carry out the constitutional, ceremonial and civic duties that attach to the role of Head of State, believing sincerely that these duties contribute in an important way to ensuring the stability of our political system and to securing the prosperity of the economy and the well-being of the people.
As a proud Queenslander, conscious of my heritage, I pledge that I will do all I can to serve the people of Queensland and to promote and enhance the welfare and standing of the State.
To this end, I look forward to a strong engagement with our community; to travelling widely throughout the State, to meet as many Queenslanders as possible, learning about their interests and aspirations, recognising their endeavours and their achievements; and gaining a full appreciation of the strength, diversity and creativity that defines contemporary Queensland.
I am especially pleased to be taking up this role on the eve of Queensland's Sesqui-centenary in 2009. This will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our rich history and culture - both indigenous and non-indigenous; to reflect on who we are and what we stand for as Queenslanders and to determine what it is we can contribute in the future, to this great State and to Australia.
In serving as Governor, I know I will be greatly assisted in the performance of my duties, by the love, support and encouragement of my husband and daughters and of our families, whose Queensland roots are deep and strong. I thank those family members who are here today; as I thank all of you for your presence on this special occasion.
As I seek to fulfil the responsibilities of this high office which has been entrusted to me, I look forward to earning the trust, goodwill and support of all Queenslanders.
