On this day …
On Monday, in the morning, at St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Indooroopilly, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM visited the Thread Together Retail Hub, and the Governor addressed guests.
Former Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and the 24th Governor of Queensland, the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO; Walter Taylor Ward Councillor James Mackay; Bishop of Carlisle United Kingdom, the Right Reverend James Newcome; Parish Priest, St Andrew’s Anglican Church, the Reverend Suzanne Grimmett, CEO of Thread Together, Mr Anthony Chesler; Anglicare Southern Queensland Executive Director, Mrs Sue Cooke and members of the Board; distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.
I begin by acknowledging the original custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
It is such a delight to be here this morning to recognise the wonderful work of the many volunteers, workers and customers who have made the Thread Together service and Retail Hub the enormous success it has been in its first two years of operation.
Queenslanders helping Queenslanders – it is something we do so well right across our State. As Governor, I am always proud to recognise the efforts of those who look after our most vulnerable, and Thread Together is a great example of that selfless Queensland spirit in action.
Since its establishment in 2021, the service has redirected brand new clothing from landfill, to more than five-and-a-half-thousand Queenslanders in need.
Whether it’s dressing those who have lost their home to flood or fire, or providing clean, new clothes to vulnerable women who have fled domestic violence, Thread Together provides comfort, dignity and a sense of self-worth and hope to people who are doing it tough.
And in doing so, successfully redirects tonnes of clothing destined for landfill, lessening the very real impact of fast fashion on our environment.
It shows what can be done when people work together to create real change. From the retailers who donate their end of line stock, to the charities and social service agencies who distribute it, and the many volunteers, supporters and corporate partners who make that all possible, Queensland thanks you.
