His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland, and Mrs Kaye de Jersey, will visit the United Kingdom and Malaysia from 10 - 22 March 2017, representing and reaffirming Queensland’s trade, business and cultural interests with the two nations, and promoting Queensland in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
In the UK, the Governor will attend an audience with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and on Commonwealth Day (13 March 2017), attend the launch of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay, and attend the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey followed by a Commonwealth Day Reception.
The Governor will also undertake a number of other engagements supporting Queensland’s business, trade and cultural interests with the UK, including: meeting Australian and Queensland diplomatic and trade representatives; attending events promoting the Gold Coast as an investment destination ahead of the Games; meeting representatives of companies with significant business interests in Queensland; meeting Queensland’s Rhodes Scholars currently studying at the University of Oxford; and undertaking a visit to the Harefield (St Mary’s) Churchyard Cemetery where His Excellency will lay memorials on the graves of Queenslanders.
The Governor and Mrs de Jersey will also visit Malaysia, where, among other engagements, the Governor will meet representatives of companies with significant business interests in Queensland; deliver a keynote speech at a business lunch hosted by the Malaysia Australia Business Council; and promote Queensland as an investment and education destination.
Queensland’s two-way trade with the United Kingdom and Malaysia exceeded $4.1 billion in 2015-16, and both countries are significant sources of foreign investment in Queensland.
The Honourable Chief Justice Catherine Holmes will assume duties as Acting Governor of Queensland.
