His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland, today presented Australian Honours and Awards to the following Queenslanders at special ceremonies in Cairns:

Mrs Naomi Wilson

Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division

For service to the people and Parliament of Queensland, as Member for Mulgrave, Parliamentary Secretary, Minister for Community Services, Youth and Families, and Councillor of Mulgrave Shire Council, and through leadership roles in a wide range of organisations including Anglicare North Queensland, the Australian Education and Care Quality Authority and the Cairns and District Childcare Development Association.

Mr Francis Richard Ireland

 

Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division

For service to the community of Cairns through a range of roles, including with automotive industry entities and community organisations, including the Far North Queensland Youth Assistance Fund, Advance Cairns, the Rotary Club of Cairns, the Cairns Campus Founders Committee of James Cook University and the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre.

Ms Denise Craig  

Medal of the Order of Australian in the General Division

For service to people living with dementia and their support networks, through the Far North Queensland Aged Care Assessment Team and Memory Service of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, as well as leadership and representative roles with the Statewide Dementia Clinical Network.

Ms Patricia Bailey

Medal of the Order of Australian in the General Division

For service to the community of Cairns, through the Cairns Hospital Foundation Board, Meals on Wheels, the Reef Hotel Casino Community Benefit Fund and similar programs, and through volunteer contributions after natural disasters, and to rugby league, as long-standing Secretary/Operations Manager of Cairns District Rugby League and other sporting clubs.

Lieutenant Peter Asimakis

Conspicuous Service Medal  

For meritorious achievement as a lead member of the Sea Training Unit Defence Cooperation Programme, increasing the capability of regional maritime security forces and enhancing the reputation of the Australian Defence Force through developing and delivering tailored training packages for the operational employment of the Guardian Class Patrol Boats for Australia’s regional partners.

Lieutenant Commander Steven Taragel

Conspicuous Service Medal 

For meritorious achievement as the Executive Officer of HMAS Cairns, demonstrating leadership, initiative and dedication to the men and women with whom he served, enhancing a positive culture and guiding improvements in day-to-day management which created benchmarks for other establishments, and directly contributing to Navy’s Fit to Fight Fleet Resilience Plan.

Ms Gabrielle Payne

Australian Corrections Medal

For dedication and commitment to Queensland Corrective Services in improving service delivery in remote communities, enhancing coordinated responses to domestic and family violence and reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the criminal justice system, and through management roles and a range of initiatives in the Far Northern Region.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Clark

Australian Police Medal

For dedication, commitment, skill and excellence to adult and juvenile investigations, rural policing and community engagement with the Queensland Police Service, including as Officer in Charge of Mount Isa Child Protection Investigation Unit, demonstrating leadership, developing innovative investigative practices and breaking down barriers between police and local Indigenous communities.

Mr Thomas Glmore

Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division

For service to local government, as Councillor and Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council and Tablelands Shire Council, and to the community of Mareeba, as Member for Tablelands and Minister for Mines and Energy, and through the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils and the Wet Tropics Management Authority.

Mr Fariborz Rameshfar

Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division

For service to remote communities in Far North Queensland, as a greengrocer, travelling from the Atherton Tablelands by truck each week and delivering fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, dairy produce, smallgoods, newspapers and other essential items to ever appreciative customers.

Mr Ashley Cupitt

Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division

For service to the community of Yungaburra, as Auxiliary Captain, Peer Support Officer and firefighter with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, and to boxing, as a professional, amateur and volunteer boxing trainer and coach for a wide range of boxing organisations and entities. 

Mr Henry Dan

Member of the Order of Australia in the General Division

For significant service to music, and to the Indigenous community, as singer-songwriter, Seaman Dan, writing and recording multiple albums showcasing traditional Torres Strait music and other styles, and co-writing Steady, Steady: The Life of Seaman Dan about his life in the Torres Strait and his development as a musician.

Mrs Lillian Bowen

Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division

For service to the Indigenous community of Cape York, as Community and Indigenous Language Teacher at the Hope Vale campus of the Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy, and an advocate of Aboriginal language, founding member of the Pama Language Centre, and author of a children’s book in the Guugu Yimidhirr language.
