His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland, today launched a children's book about Gavel the Vice-Regal Dog.

'Gavel Finds His Place' follows Gavel on his adventures around Queensland as he finds his place in life.

Along the way he tries his hand as a flight nurse with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as a scientist on the Great Barrier Reef, as an underground miner in Central Queensland, and working alongside Indigenous rangers on Cape York.

Gavel eventually finds his calling happily greeting guests at the official residence in Brisbane of The Queen's representative, the Queensland Governor.

Stunning illustrations encourage children to learn more about the many magnificent places in Queensland.

‘Gavel Finds His Place’ is partly based on the real-life story of Gavel the German Shepherd, who came to Government House in 2016 while training to be a Queensland Police Service working dog. Too friendly for a life on the front line, Gavel was appointed as the State’s first official Vice-Regal Dog in 2017.

The launch of 'Gavel Finds His Place' occurred at a special morning tea at Government House during Children's Book Week. Mrs de Jersey read the book to students from primary schools surrounding the Fernberg estate.

The Governor is Patron of the Queensland chapter of the Children's Book Council of Australia.
