MR DARREN CHARLES FYFE

Bravery Medal

Mr Darren Fyfe displayed considerable bravery during the rescue of a man from a burning vehicle near Blanchetown in South Australia on 20 May 2015.

Mr Fyfe was travelling in his prime mover truck on the Sturt Highway when he witnessed a fireball ahead of him following a collision between two vehicles.  One vehicle come to rest on its roof, while the second vehicle spun out of control before coming to a stop. Both vehicles were on fire.

He immediately stopped his truck, called for emergency assistance on his radio and ran to the first vehicle. The driver's side door was open and airbags deployed but the car was empty.  He then saw a person walking along the middle of the highway.

As Mr Fyfe approached the second vehicle it exploded, knocking him backwards.  He approached again, and could now hear its occupants yelling.  He saw the roof had partially caved in and a pair of men's boots hanging out from the passenger side.

With access to the vehicle restricted by fire and the crushed roof, he managed to grab hold of the boots and, after three or four hard pulls, extracted a male occupant and dragged him away from the vehicle.  The man had sustained serious burns.

Mr Fyfe encouraged the man to stay where he was as the burning vehicle exploded for a second time, trapping the female occupant inside.

By his actions, Mr Fyfe displayed considerable bravery.
