The Governor recently hosted a Reception at Government House to honour 109 exceptional Queensland students selected to participate in the 2026 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Year 12 Program. These students, chosen through a highly competitive process, represent the next generation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) leaders in Queensland and across Australia.
The Reception celebrated the students’ achievements and their upcoming participation in one of Australia’s most prestigious STEM programs. The NYSF Year 12 Program, now in its 41st year, provides youth-led experiences that connect young Australians with their science and technology futures. Participants will meet leading STEM professionals, explore cutting-edge facilities, and engage with like-minded peers from across the country.
In formal Remarks, the Governor congratulated the students on their selection, acknowledging the significance of their achievement. “Places in the National Youth Science Forum are much sought after,” Her Excellency said. “I congratulate you on being selected into this transformative program where you will no doubt meet some incredible practitioners in your areas of interest and also be invited to explore less familiar domains.”
The Governor emphasised the importance of STEM in addressing the challenges of a fast-changing world, noting the critical role science and technology played during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on her time as Queensland’s Chief Medical Officer, Her Excellency shared her gratitude for the scientists and innovators who developed life-saving vaccines. She also highlighted the current STEM skills shortage in Australia, underscoring the importance of supporting young Australians to lead in these fields.
The NYSF Year 12 Program offers participants a unique opportunity to explore a wide spectrum of science and technology fields, from quantum biotechnology to supercomputing. Students will attend one of two sessions in January 2026, held at the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
The Governor encouraged students to embrace the program’s opportunities and to be bold in exploring new possibilities. “NYSF will spark your curiosity and challenge your thinking, as well as shape your outlook on future directions,” Her Excellency said.
As students return to school for Term 4, the Governor’s reception served as a reminder of the incredible opportunities that lie ahead for Queensland’s youth.
