Queensland Symphony Orchestra Reception to Mark the Beginning of 2016 Season
Kaye and I are delighted to host this evening’s reception to celebrate the opening concert of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s twenty-sixteen season. A very warm welcome to you all.
As Patron of the Orchestra and Governor, I am particularly pleased that this reception gives me an opportunity, on behalf of all Queenslanders, to acknowledge two exceptional women. First, I officially welcome Ms Alondra de la Parra to our State as Music Director Designate of the Orchestra. Second, I extend sincere thanks and congratulations to Ms Sophie Galaise as she leaves us to take up her appointment with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
During her all-too-brief time with us, Ms Galaise has led the QSO team to great success in sponsorship and ticket sales, and has encouraged and supported innovation in education programs and non-traditional blockbuster events.
Importantly, she has also focussed on building national and international recognition for the Orchestra, and it is that reputation which has enabled the Orchestra to attract and appoint a candidate of the calibre of Ms de la Parra as the Orchestra’s Music Director.
Both Alondra and Sophie came to Queensland from countries and cultures far removed from our own, but the very fact of their choosing to live and work here is evidence of just what an exciting time this is in the Arts in our State.
Part of that excitement is that Alondra’s appointment marks the first time the Music Director of any Australian orchestra will combine the roles of Chief Conductor, Artistic Director, and Community Arts Leader.
I congratulate the Board on this far-sighted decision.
It brings the Orchestra in line with major orchestras around the world and reinforces its reputation as an innovative company and a leader in the sector.
I am very much looking forward to Mahler’s Resurrection symphony – bar by magnificent bar – later this month – what an epic season opener!
Thank you – and please enjoy our Government House hospitality
