4MBS 5th Annual ‘Christmas Spectacular Starring Mirusia and Friends’
Chair, 4MBS Board, Mr Ralph Devlin AM; Board members, Mr Ted Chapman, Dr Kerry Vann-Leeflang and Ms Sue Webster; General Manager, 4MBS, Mr Gary Thorpe OAM; distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen; and of course, all of the wonderful artists performing here this afternoon.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera peoples, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to any First Nations people here today.
It is a great pleasure to join you here this afternoon, and to be among friends of 4MBS and the arts more broadly in Queensland. As Patron of 4MBS Classic FM, I am particularly delighted to be able to show my support for the Music Broadcasting Society of Queensland, which has done so much to foster and promote a love of music for more than 46 years now.
Christmas is a season that calls us to pause and reflect on what truly matters–kindness, generosity, and community. Music has a unique ability to express these values. It transcends boundaries, brings people together, and reminds us of the beauty and harmony that can exist in our lives, and especially during the season of sharing and giving.
Today’s concert does exactly that–offering us a program that celebrates the Christmas tradition while also embracing creativity and excellence.
And behind this celebration of music stands an organisation that long ago outgrew its core function as a radio station and became a cultural force in our State, producing festivals, concerts, and broadcasts that have enriched the lives of countless Queenslanders.
I am particularly fond of the annual 4MBS Brisbane Shakespeare Festival and was sorely disappointed that I couldn’t attend last month, although my husband Graeme and daughter Jane attended on my behalf.
However, there is also the annual 4MBS Festival of Classics–the largest of its kind in Australia–regular live concerts in and around Brisbane, and even a Classics Concert Cruise, which sounds absolutely wonderful and happens to combine two of my favourite things–cruising and classical music!
And of course, this breadth of offerings can be used to support new and meaningful initiatives, such as the Silver Memories radio service for aged care homes, playing music from decades past the to help older people–many of them living with dementia–to live a dignified life and bringing some comfort in being able to reconnect with their past.
All of this creativity, skill and community service has flowed from 4MBS’s unassuming headquarters on Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo, which for me holds a special memory–it was the place where Jane, my daughter, played her end-of-year piano concert some years ago now, as an 8-year-old. A reminder that these spaces not only broadcast music but create moments that stay with us!
The many accomplishments of 4MBS speak to the vision, perseverance, and passion of its people.
I particularly acknowledge Mr Gary Thorpe OAM, whose leadership and artistic direction have shaped the organisation. Gary’s dedication ensures that classical music remains vibrant and accessible, and his work continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike. I also commend the Board, staff, volunteers, and supporters whose commitment makes this celebration possible. Your efforts reflect the true spirit of Christmas–giving generously of time and talent to bring joy to others.
As we enjoy this afternoon of festive music, may it remind us of the values that unite us: peace, goodwill, and hope. I wish you all a joyful Christmas and a safe, prosperous year ahead.
Thank you.
