Community Bushland Walk in Support of The Arthritis Movement’s “March for Arthritis
Representing the Premier, Assistant Minister to the Premier on Matters of State and New Citizens, Leader of the House, Dr Christian Rowan MP; Health and Wellbeing Queensland CEO, Dr Robyn Littlewood, staff and volunteers; The Arthritis Movement CEO, Ms Michelle Devoy; and the many walkers who have chosen to get active with us this morning.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera peoples, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to any First Nations people here today.
Graeme and I are delighted to welcome you all here this morning, ready to explore the beautiful bushland grounds of Government House while raising awareness for a very special cause—the launch of March for Arthritis.
As Joint Patron (with Graeme) of The Arthritis Movement, and as Patron of Health and Wellbeing Queensland, I am so pleased to support a wonderfully inclusive initiative that encourages Queenslanders to get moving for better physical and mental health.
For the entire month ahead, the March for Arthritis virtual walkathon invites people of all ages and abilities to be active for 20 minutes each day. Significantly, participants can choose whatever level or type of movement works for their body and circumstances to achieve this goal—and yes, dancing counts!
Every single person who participates in March for Arthritis is helping progress outcomes for those directly affected, while also highlighting how much better we all feel when we move.
Given that so many Australians are impacted by arthritis—which actually encompasses 100 or so conditions—and 20 percent of those affected require help with their daily activities, there is a tremendous need to ensure that the many programs and services of The Arthritis Movement can continue to help people stay independent and hopeful for a pain-free future.
A bit about our walk–– we will be showing you the wonderful bushland tracks Graeme and I opened just last year, across the other side of the property, which will hopefully be enjoyed by many more Queenslanders long after we have moved on from this very special place
Where possible we have sought to preserve its many natural features, such as the remnant bushland which provide a haven for native animals, while honouring its history as a working Vice-Regal property.
If you glance around you may also spot a QR code link to an online book, written by Graeme during his time here.
It’s called ‘Stepping Out from Fernberg’ and it details the many walks he has taken through the suburbs surrounding Fernberg, including the area he grew up.
It’s full of maps, guidance around elevation and other practical information, as well as some fascinating historical insights.
We hope you enjoy your time here and thank you for your support.
