Dinner in support of Young Entrepreneurs
CEO of Trade and Investment Queensland, Mr Justin McGowan; Acting Deputy Director-General, Innovation, Mr Tony King; distinguished guests, good evening.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to any First Nations people here this afternoon.
I am very excited to host this dinner for you and warmly welcome you to Government House this evening. I am thrilled that you could join me as I wish to offer not only my support for the entrepreneurial ventures and that you have instigated in our wonderful state but also to offer my congratulations and thanks for this work.
As Governor of Queensland, I take great pride in knowing that within our community are individuals who think differently—those who challenge convention and strive to create a better future on behalf of others.
Entrepreneurship is not new—but the ability to anticipate disruptions to established markets and devise solutions to emerging societal challenges is both timely and vital. You are the individuals leading the way, navigating uncharted paths and shaping a new future.
Innovation lies at the heart of your work, yet entrepreneurship is so much more: it demands creativity and curiosity, self-belief and a readiness to embrace risk—and perhaps above all, a deep commitment to hard work.
Entrepreneurial spirit is so often credited with driving a range of positive outcomes—from economic growth and job creation to the stimulation of healthy competition – which ultimately benefits consumers and clients through the development of new goods and services.
It’s important for all of us that the cycle of entrepreneurial drive remains strong. We rely on those who see the world differently to keep new ideas flowing and to help shape a better future for everyone.
Innovation emerges from many sectors, and this evening we are fortunate to see a diverse array of them represented in the room. Just as varied are the individuals behind the ideas—you come from all walks of life, pursuing different paths, whether individually or as part of a collective vision.
The spirit of innovation is alive and well here at Government House — not only in the creativity reflected in tonight’s dinner, but in the ideas we are embracing to help evolve this historic institution. As part of Queensland’s democratic fabric, we’re working to ensure that the role of the Governor remains relevant and resonant, by finding new ways to connect with Queenslanders and reflect the diverse, dynamic state we serve.
And please note, we are always open to ideas!
This meal itself is a celebration of Queensland’s finest produce, thoughtfully prepared by our chef, Paul Newsham, and his staff. I encourage you to savour not just the flavours but also the stories and dedication behind each creation. May this evening’s food and conversation inspire fresh ideas and new connections. Please enjoy the meal and the company. Thank you.
