Hughenden Community Reception
Flinders Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Kate Peddle; distinguished guests; and members of the Hughenden community and surrounds, welcome all.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands Hughenden is on, the Yirendali people, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to any First Nations people here this evening.
My husband, Graeme, and I are honoured to be with you here in Hughenden, and we thank you for your warm welcome during what I know has been an incredibly challenging time.
We begin by offering our sincere sympathies to all those in Hughenden and surrounding areas affected by the recent floods — the most severe in decades. We are deeply mindful of the toll these events have taken on families, homes, businesses, and properties right across this region. I want you to know that I am here tonight on behalf of all Queenslanders, to express their collective admiration for the resilience, strength, and spirit you have shown.
Hughenden has long been known for that strength. It’s a place of history, heart, and hard work — and that character has been so clearly demonstrated in recent months.
When I became Governor more than three years ago, I made a pledge to visit Queenslanders where they live. It’s a big state… but I am making good on that pledge, shire by shire, town by town, community by community.
Visiting places like Hughenden reminds me not only of the incredible diversity of this part of the world — from the vast grazing lands that support Queensland’s beef industry, to the region’s rich fossil heritage and natural wonders like Porcupine Gorge — but also of the deep human resource we can draw upon. The knowledge, adaptability and determination of communities like this one are among our state’s greatest assets.
You have remained front of mind for communities across the state. People are standing with you — and willing you forward — during this difficult time.
To the first responders, council teams, volunteers, SES crews, and neighbours who stepped up to protect lives and livelihoods: thank you. Your courage and commitment are inspiring, and your efforts reflect the very best of our state. I know many of you have endured significant losses — from flood-damaged homes and local infrastructure to the heartbreaking impacts on the land, on livestock, and on daily life. Recovery will take time. But if any town is ready to meet that challenge, it is Hughenden.
The stories I’ve heard — of people opening their homes, checking on neighbours, and pulling together to restore what was lost — speak volumes about the spirit of this place.
This is a proud and close-knit community. And as you work through recovery, please know your efforts are seen, respected, and supported — not only by those here tonight, but by Queenslanders far and wide.
Thank you once again for welcoming us here. I will carry your stories with me, and I will continue to advocate for recovery efforts that honour your dignity, your resilience, and your future.
