Open Day 2025
Delivered by the Honourable Chief Justice Helen Bowskill, Acting Governor of Queensland
Good morning, everyone—and a very warm welcome to Government House!
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to any First Nations people here today.
By way of introduction, I am here in my capacity as Acting Governor, while Her Excellency is taking part in a trade and investment mission to Japan, representing Queensland interests at the World Expo in Osaka and reinforcing our state’s sister city relationship.
It is not the first time I have served as Acting Governor. It is, of course, a requirement under the Constitution of Queensland that when a Governor is out of state her powers are delegated.
And while I am always honoured as Chief Justice to assume the role of Acting Governor, being asked to spend time at the office is rarely this exciting, or fun! Nor do I have the chance very often to wave the Queensland flag, and to talk so publicly about what makes this state such a wonderful place to live.
Queensland Day is certainly a great occasion to reflect on everything that sets our state apart. From our breathtaking natural landscapes and vibrant multicultural communities to our spirit of innovation, resilience and generosity—it’s a day to celebrate what connects us as Queenslanders.
And what better place to do that than right here at Government House—a home that’s been at the heart of Queensland public life for over a century. Whether you’ve come to explore the heritage-listed House, take a stroll through the bushland tracks, enjoy the music and performances, or simply relax with family and friends—this is your day.
I am delighted to welcome some of the many organisations of which the Governor is proud Patron—including Surf Life Saving Queensland, Tennis Queensland, and Circa, who will be performing live here on the grounds.
Their presence reminds us of the many and varied ways in which we, as Queenslanders, can participate in the civic, cultural and commercial life of our state, be it through social clubs, sporting organisations, music groups and so many other facets of community life.
So, thank you for joining us today.
I hope you enjoy everything on offer and leave with an even greater appreciation for the unique and wonderful place we call home.
