Queensland Scouts Annual Awards Ceremony

Scouts Queensland Chief Commissioner, Mr Geoff Doo; Branch President, The Honourable Jane Prentice; Branch Commissioner Venturer, Mr David Wright; Branch Commissioner Rover Scouts, Mr Paul ‘Caesar’ Lappin; distinguished guests; members of the scouting movement, your families and friends; ladies and gentlemen; boys and girls.

I begin by also acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands on which we are gathered, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to any First Nations people here this morning.

Good morning. It is a pleasure to join you today for the presentation of your annual awards.

As Governor, and as Chief Scout, this is one of the most uplifting events in my calendar. It is a celebration of the achievements, service, leadership, and the enduring values that have shaped scouting for more than a century.

Today we recognise and celebrate some of the highest awards in the Scouts order — for both youth and adult participants.

Being here today is also particularly special for me, as four years ago this month I was sworn in as Queensland’s Chief Scout here at Baden-Powell Park, a place known as the home ground of Scouts in Queensland.

Since then, I have worn my scarf and badge with pride and learnt much about this amazing organisation that encourages and shapes the development of our young people, giving them practical opportunities to build their resilience, initiative and confidence; and to reach outside their comfort zones to acquire new skills and expertise.  

Through programs and activities Scouts also acquire excellent problem-solving skills, and by being socially connected they also enhance their own wellbeing and develop strong friendships.  

As I near the end of my term as the 27th Governor, this will be among my last opportunities to address you as your Chief Scout.

However please know that the scouting movement will always hold a special place in my heart for the enduring influence it has on Scouts throughout their entire lives, helping them to fulfil the Scout’s Promise to be the best they can be, always.

Today’s award ceremony has been very inspiring, enabling us to formally recognise and celebrate those receiving some of the highest awards in the Scout’s order — from the King’s Scout Awards, to the Baden-Powell Scout Awards, the National President’s Awards and the Silver Kangaroos.

We have recognised and honoured dozens of young people and adults who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the ideals of scouting.  

Whether through outdoor adventurous activities, community service and personal achievements these individuals have shown initiative, resilience and leadership — and a willingness to challenge themselves, support one another and contribute positively to society.

These awards recognise excellence, as well as hard work and determination. They acknowledge the countless hours spent planning activities, completing challenges, supporting peers, and contributing to local communities.  

In fostering a strong sense of service to others, and in empowering young people to reach their full potential, the scouting movement continues to strengthen communities across our state.

It is with great pride that I warmly congratulate each of those who have received awards today. May this recognition inspire you to continue living the values of scouting: to do your best, help others, and live your lives with integrity.

These awards, however, are not possible without the incredible support of Scouts Queensland, its dedicated leaders, thousands of generous volunteers and — of course — supportive parents and families.  

I extend my sincere gratitude to those of you who make scouting possible for thousands of youth and adult members across our state. Your mentorship and dedication ensure that scouting remains strong, inclusive and inspiring.  

Queensland is proud of its Scouts and of the contribution they make to our state. Indeed, I am immensely proud to have been your Chief Scout!
