Reception in celebration of Youngcare's 20th Anniversary
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, the Honourable Tim Nicholls MP; Youngcare Co-Founders, Mr David Conry AM, Mr Nick Bonifant, Mr Matthew Lawson and Mr Simon Lockyer; Chief Executive Officer, Ms Clare Stewart; Ambassador, Ms Lisa Cox OAM; staff and supporters; distinguished guests.
I begin by acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands around Brisbane, the Turrbal and Jagera people, and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
As Governor of Queensland, I am delighted to be hosting this reception at Government House acknowledging the 20th anniversary of your wonderful organisation. This is indeed a milestone to be proud of, and one that deserves celebrating.
We know Youngcare for its groundbreaking work on behalf of young people who are living with complex and permanent physical disabilities––creating choices for them to live the way they wish to live. And for 20 years now you have brought to public attention the need for all citizens, regardless of physical constraints, to live fulfilling lives and be included and connected to their communities.
Inspired by the experience of Shevaune Conry, Youngcare’s founders and supporters created awareness around this important issue and for over two decades have advocated for the necessary societal change that we have seen in this area of the disability sector.
They conceived an idea that would develop into housing options that more appropriately and more fully serve the needs of young people with physical disabilities, taking them out of aged care facilities, institutional homes and hospitals. In effect, Youngcare has revolutionised the manner in which these young people live.
We know that it is essential for long term health and wellbeing that all people feel a sense of belonging to their communities, no matter who they are, where they are or what physical difficulties they may face.
Through the work of Youngcare, this idea of inclusion has become a reality for so many young Queenslanders with high physical support needs. By challenging the way that society views disability, Youngcare has created pathways to better ways of living for those who previously have not had such options.
We all love the idea of home, a place where we can feel comfortable, safe and secure. A place where our needs are met and we are free to be ourselves. Youngcare’s specialised housing options do just that by providing purpose-built disability accommodation, recognising that each and every person is different and so too, are their needs.
In our celebrations today I wish to highlight and thank all who have contributed to making Youngcare a powerful voice in the disability landscape.
To CEO, Ms Clare Stewart, board members, staff, partners, volunteers, individuals and families, your input has been pivotal to delivering the housing outcomes, grant programs and support platforms for which Youngcare is now so well known.
Congratulations on 20 years of dedicated service to community, and best wishes as you continue your work advocating on behalf of all young people with high care disability.
Thank you.
