I begin by also acknowledging the Original Custodians of the lands on which we gather and pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to all First Nations people here tonight.
As Governor of Queensland, it is a privilege and an honour to be in Townsville for the Victory in the Pacific commemorations. I am so proud that Townsville, as Australia’s leading garrison city, has rallied to present this rolling three-day program of commemorative activities.
Many of these events are ceremonial in nature, paying our deep respects to the courage and sacrifices of our servicemen and women who fought for the peace we cherish today. However, tonight’s dinner under the stars is an opportunity for us to come together, to not only remember but also to celebrate the freedoms we now enjoy.
As we know, it was exactly 80 years ago today that Australia’s then Prime Minister Ben Chifley took to the radio to announce that after six long years, the Second World War was finally over. Following the announcement, scenes of unbridled joy erupted around the country, including in Flinders Street, here in Townsville.
Crowds gathered in the streets in record numbers, strangers hugged each other and danced together.
Tonight, we will re-live some of that joy thanks to the talented Australian and American military bands who will be performing, along with some fabulous singers. They’ll recreate the World War Two jazz era music that helped to lift the spirits of our community back then.
And while we celebrate tonight, we also pause to honour all Australians who bravely served in the Second World War and who fought to achieve Victory in the Pacific. I want to acknowledge the World War II veterans who are here. I know you join with me in offering our deep gratitude and respect for the roles they played in bringing victory to the Pacific. Their courage and service will never be forgotten.
And I also honour the courageous and remarkable individuals who serve in our defence force today, and sincerely thank them for the central role they play in continuing to protect our nation.
I commend the Townsville City Council for coordinating this program of commemorations, and for opening up these magnificent botanic gardens for tonight’s joyful celebrations.
My husband Graeme and I hope you have a night to remember. Thank you.
